Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar has announced his resignation due to health concerns, effective immediately, on the opening day of the Monsoon Session on July 21, 2025. Elected as India’s 14th Vice-President in August 2022, Dhankhar’s resignation comes as a significant surprise, especially given that he had two years remaining on his term.

In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar cited the need to prioritize his health and follow medical advice, specifically referencing a cardiac event he experienced earlier in March this year. While he had seemingly recovered and participated actively in his role, including chairing a key session in the Rajya Sabha addressing the removal of High Court judge Yashwant Varma, the sudden announcement left many leaders in the political arena taken aback.

Dhankhar expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, the Council of Ministers, and fellow members of Parliament for their support and confidence during his tenure. Several members of Parliament noted that he did not indicate his decision to resign during conversations earlier in the day. Despite presiding over a busy session and engaging with MPs, Dhankhar unexpectedly chose not to return for the afternoon session.

His tenure as both Vice-President and previously as Governor of West Bengal garnered attention for his outspoken nature on various issues, including his advocacy for farmers amidst recent protests. In December 2024, he also experienced a tense relationship with opposition parties, which saw an impeachment motion dismissed by Deputy Chairperson Harivansh.

As of now, President Murmu has yet to publicly respond to Dhankhar’s resignation. This unexpected development has initiated discussions on the future leadership of the Rajya Sabha and the political landscape ahead.

This resignation not only emphasizes the personal health challenges faced by public figures but also reflects the fast-paced changes within India’s political structure. It’s a reminder of the importance of health and well-being, even in high-pressure roles.
