The US Department of Transportation announced on Monday that it is investigating approximately 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reports of sudden engine stalls that often prevent vehicles from restarting.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that 2022 RAM 1500 trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs are experiencing a sudden loss of power attributed to electrical issues leading to engine shutdowns and intermittent restarting problems.

The Office of Defects Investigation has received 80 consumer complaints regarding engine stalls and power loss in these vehicles, which are equipped with the 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines from the Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group LLC (FCA).

Many of the complaints indicated that the engine would shut off unexpectedly, particularly while driving at low speeds, causing the vehicle to shift into park and engage the emergency brake, according to the NHTSA.

So far, there have been no reported injuries related to this issue, and a preliminary investigation has been opened, potentially paving the way for a recall. Stellantis, the manufacturer, has stated it is fully cooperating with the investigation.

This investigation adds to the recent challenges faced by Stellantis, as sales for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram saw declines in the second quarter. Earlier this month, a recall investigation for 94,000 Jeep Wranglers was initiated by the government, and in June, the company recalled over 1 million vehicles in North America due to a software issue that could heighten crash risks.
