The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated an investigation into approximately 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reports of sudden engine stalls that often prevent the vehicles from restarting.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) specifically pointed to issues in the 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs, which are believed to be experiencing a loss of power attributed to electrical problems leading to engine shutdowns.
In total, the NHTSA has received around 80 consumer complaints of engine stalls and loss of power related to the affected vehicles. These models are equipped with the 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines manufactured by Stellantis, which encompasses brands including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram. Complaints indicate that in several cases, the vehicles would shut off unexpectedly while driving at low speeds, with some shifting into park and activating the emergency brake.
Fortunately, no injuries have been linked to these engine malfunctions, but this preliminary investigation could pave the way for a recall if necessary. In response, Stellantis has stated that it is cooperating fully with the NHTSA’s investigation.
This investigation comes at a challenging time for Stellantis, as the company has reported declining sales for its Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram brands in the second quarter. Earlier this month, another recall investigation was launched concerning 94,000 Jeep Wranglers, and in June, Stellantis had to recall over 1 million vehicles in North America due to a software issue that raised crash risks.
It is essential that vehicle manufacturers address safety concerns promptly to ensure consumer confidence and safety. This investigation could ultimately lead to improvements in vehicle technology and safety protocols, promising a better experience for future consumers.
Summary: The U.S. Department of Transportation is investigating 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs for sudden engine stalls due to electrical issues. The NHTSA received numerous consumer complaints regarding these incidents, which could result in a recall. Stellantis is cooperating with the investigation as it faces declining sales and previous recall issues.
