Debrina Kawam, a 57-year-old woman from Toms River, New Jersey, was tragically identified as the victim of a brutal attack in the New York City subway earlier this month. The incident occurred on December 22 when Kawam was sleeping on an idle F train at the Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. A man allegedly set her on fire just before 7:30 a.m. and subsequently fled the scene.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences to Kawam’s family, describing the event as horrific and emphasizing the emotional toll such violence has on the community. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez echoed these sentiments, highlighting that regardless of circumstances, every life is valuable, and the loss has devastated Kawam’s family.

A vigil was held in honor of Kawam at the scene of the incident, showcasing the community’s grief and solidarity. Following the attack, authorities arrested 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a Guatemalan national, who has been charged with multiple counts, including murder and arson. He was caught on police body camera footage and apprehended after concerned subway riders alerted the authorities. Zapeta-Calil is currently in custody and faces severe penalties, including the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted.

This tragic incident has drawn attention not only to the violence that can erupt in public spaces but also to the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. It serves as a reminder of the need for compassion and support within the community to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the case unfolds, there is hope that it will lead to wider discussions about safety, mental health support, and resources for vulnerable populations. This tragedy sparks a renewed call for initiatives that aim to protect and uplift those in precarious situations, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all New Yorkers.
