Luis Suarez did it again.
The 37-year-old Inter Miami striker, known for his controversial career, came off the bench to score for Uruguay in stoppage time, pushing the thrilling match into a penalty shootout.
Canada’s Ismael Kone, who had earlier scored a spectacular and innovative goal, and star player Alphonso Davies both missed their penalties, handing the win to Uruguay.
Rodrigo Bentancur initially gave Uruguay the lead with a sharp angled finish. Kone responded for Canada with an impressive and audacious goal, possibly a standing bicycle kick.
Facundo Pellestri had a first-half goal disallowed after a VAR review, but Canada’s Jonathan David came off the bench to score in the 80th minute. Canada seemed poised to secure a $1 million prize (awarded to the team finishing third at Copa America), but Suarez had different plans.
Adding to the pre-match drama were comments from two former Leeds United coaches. Marcelo Bielsa criticized the tournament as “unprofessional,” while Jesse Marsch felt his team was treated like “second-class” citizens. These remarks set the stage for a heated match.
Ultimately, it was Uruguay and Bielsa who emerged victorious.
