Outfielder Stuart Fairchild has joined Taiwan’s national baseball team at the Taipei Dome as they gear up for the World Baseball Classic (WBC), which will take place from March 5 to 17. Despite the challenges of potential jet lag from his 15-hour flight, Fairchild showcased his skills in batting practice, hitting hard fly balls with notably impressive swing speed and power, as assessed by former MLB pitcher Chen Wei-yin.

Fairchild, who boasts a career .223 batting average with 18 home runs and 68 RBIs over five seasons in Major League Baseball, is part of Taiwan’s 30-man roster for this year’s prestigious tournament. He arrived in Taiwan on Thursday and will be traveling to Japan with the team on Saturday.

The unique opportunity to play for Taiwan was influenced by Fairchild’s connection to the island and his positive discussions with catcher Lyle Lin, his former teammate with the Diamondbacks. Fairchild expressed gratitude towards Lin for encouraging him to join the team, highlighting the passionate fan base and the overall enjoyable experience of baseball in Taiwan.

The 29-year-old outfielder conveyed his excitement and sense of honor in representing Taiwan, making it clear that he is eager to contribute on the international stage. His enthusiasm stands in contrast to the bittersweet news regarding Jonathon Long, an infielder with the Chicago Cubs organization, who has withdrawn from the WBC due to a left elbow strain. Fairchild expressed disappointment for Long, who he was looking forward to playing alongside.

As the tournament approaches, the Taiwanese team is filled with hope and determination, with Fairchild’s inclusion promising to add strength to their lineup. The excitement surrounding the WBC reflects the growing passion for baseball in Taiwan and the potential for strong performances on the world stage.
