Struggling Cardinals Face Tough Decisions Ahead of Trade Deadline

The St. Louis Cardinals suffered another tough loss, falling 10-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 19, 2025, marking their second consecutive night of disappointing performances. The defeat dropped the Cardinals to fourth place in the NL Central with a record of 51-48.

The game began ominously, with Corbin Carroll leading off with a triple and later scoring on a Geraldo Perdomo base hit. A controversial call for catcher’s interference on Pedro Pages extended the inning, allowing Eugenio Suarez to hit a two-run homer, effectively putting the game out of reach for the Cardinals early on.

Starting pitcher Sonny Gray struggled significantly, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits over just 3 1/2 innings. The Diamondbacks continued to build their lead with additional runs, including a second homer from Suarez and a well-timed triple by Carroll. After Gray’s departure, Gordon Graceffo managed to stabilize the situation with 3 2/3 scoreless innings, but the damage was done.

The evening’s lone bright spot for the Cardinals came from Alec Burleson, who hit a home run in the sixth inning. However, it was not enough to spark a comeback. Ryne Nelson, pitching for Arizona, held the Cardinals to just one run over six innings.

With the loss, the Cardinals are now 8 1/2 games behind the division leaders but remain just 2 1/2 games away from the Wild Card position. While the path to postseason contention looks challenging, there still exists a flicker of hope for the team as they prepare to face Merrill Kelly in their next game, seeking to avoid a sweep.

As the trade deadline approaches, the performance of the Cardinals will likely influence potential moves, with John Mozeliak needing to weigh options that could either strengthen the team or prepare for rebuilding.
