Streaming Showdown: Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune’s Rights Battle Intensifies

The ongoing dispute over the distribution rights to the popular game shows Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune continues as Sony Pictures Television seeks to expand their streaming accessibility. Sony has secured multi-year streaming agreements with platforms including Peacock, Hulu, and Hulu on Disney+, allowing these services to broadcast episodes of both shows the day after they air on traditional television. This initiative marks a significant moment as it is the first time in-season episodes will be available for national streaming.

Despite a recent legal decision by the Second Appellate District judges affirming CBS as the sole distributor of these shows, the situation is complicated. It is understood that streaming rights are distinct from linear rights, enabling Sony to negotiate these streaming deals independently from CBS’s traditional distribution rights.

This development follows a mixed series of rulings in court, including a May 29 decision that granted CBS distribution rights temporarily while the legal dispute unfolds. In April, L.A. Superior Court Judge Kevin C. Brazile had previously indicated that Sony could terminate existing agreements. As this legal saga continues, both companies are likely to engage in further court battles to clarify the rights concerning these beloved game shows.

The new streaming agreements will coincide with the upcoming seasons of the programs, with Jeopardy! entering Season 42 and Wheel of Fortune kicking off its 43rd season. Fans can expect to see these beloved shows reach an even wider audience this fall, according to Keith Le Goy, Chairman of Sony Pictures Television. He expressed excitement over providing fans with improved streaming access to these iconic shows.

The introduction of these streaming options could potentially breathe fresh life into these programs, attracting new viewers and ensuring their legacy continues in the evolving television landscape.
