Matt Duffer, co-creator of “Stranger Things,” has officially dismissed speculation surrounding the potential return of Joseph Quinn in Season 5. In a recent cover interview with Empire Magazine, Duffer confirmed that Quinn’s character, Eddie Munson, remains deceased, stating emphatically that he is “fully under that ground.”
Despite Quinn’s playful teasing about his involvement, Duffer’s comments put any lingering rumors to rest. “No, sadly, RIP. He’s fully under that ground,” he reiterated, reinforcing the finality of Eddie Munson’s fate after the events of Season 4.
Duffer pointed out that Quinn’s busy schedule also indicates his absence from the show. “Joe is so busy anyway, that everyone should know he’s not coming back. He’s shot like five movies since! When the hell has he got time to come and shoot ‘Stranger Things?’” he remarked. Since leaving the series, Quinn has been busy filming multiple projects, including “A Quiet Place: Day One,” “Gladiator II,” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Recently, he was cast as George Harrison in an upcoming Beatles biopic alongside notable actors such as Harris Dickinson and Paul Mescal.
Despite the clear declaration that Quinn won’t be part of the upcoming season, fans have expressed hopes for a cameo appearance. They remember how Dacre Montgomery reprised his role as Billy in Season 4 despite his character’s demise, which led to some speculation about a similar appearance from Quinn. Although Quinn hinted he would be “very up for” a guest spot, his comments have been interpreted more as playful banter than evidence of a possible return.
“Stranger Things” Season 5 Vol. 1 is set to premiere on November 26, while Vol. 2 will be available on December 25. The series finale is scheduled for December 31. Meanwhile, viewers can catch up on Seasons 1 through 4, which are currently streaming on Netflix.
As the final season approaches, the anticipation builds, but it seems fans will have to say goodbye to Eddie Munson for good.
