Two tragic drowning incidents were reported yesterday amidst inclement weather affecting various regions of the country.
In Lautoka, an eight-year-old boy named Ernest Pickering was discovered floating in the Kaleli River around 10 AM. It is believed that the young boy had gone to collect bamboo with his older brother near their home. Concerns regarding his whereabouts arose when their grandfather called for the children later that morning. Tragically, after a search that yielded no results, authorities informed the family that Ernest’s body had been recovered from the river. He was cherished as the youngest of five siblings.
In a separate occurrence, a man in his 60s, who had ventured fishing off the coast of Tubou in Lakeba, was found lifeless in the sea.
Local police have stated that investigations into both incidents are ongoing, and post-mortem examinations will be conducted to ascertain further details surrounding these unfortunate events.
As the community mourns these losses, it serves as a reminder for families to prioritize safety and remain vigilant, especially during unpredictable weather conditions.
