Stop & Shop, a century-old supermarket chain with about 350 locations in the Mid-Atlantic region, plans to shut down 32 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey this fall.
Ten of these closures will occur in New Jersey, the highest number among the affected states.
Why is Stop & Shop closing?
According to Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid, the decision to close nearly three dozen stores is based on their performance.
“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” Reid said in a press release. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”
When is Stop & Shop closing?
Stop & Shop has confirmed that the 32 stores will close on or before Saturday, Nov. 2.
“Stop & Shop will communicate specific store closing dates to local customers well in advance of any store closures,” the press release stated. “Stop & Shop remains committed to serving its communities through other store locations, online shopping, and home delivery services.”
