Stitches of Success: Fiji Designer’s Rise from Suva Market to Brand

For Taina Danford, a 47-year-old entrepreneur and fashion designer, success is a result of consistent dedication and passion. Growing up in Suva, Fiji, Danford was inspired by her mother, a talented tailor who introduced her to sewing at a young age. Her journey in fashion took root after leaving school and entering the garment and textile industry, where she honed her skills and deepened her interest in fashion.

Despite an early exit from formal education, Danford showcased resilience by participating in the Matua Program, a second-chance education initiative, and later earning a Diploma in Business Management from the University of the South Pacific. Balancing a full-time job with her entrepreneurial aspirations, she invested in a sewing machine and began selling her creations at the Suva Flea Market, a commitment that required early mornings and long days.

Danford’s perseverance led her to undertake further business training through the Ministry of Trade and SMEs’ Start and Improve Your Business program. With newfound knowledge and a drive to expand, she plans to apply for a grant to broaden her business, offering custom sizes and online ordering to meet diverse customer needs.

Through Danford’s Creation, she—like fellow entrepreneurs Tarusila Mei and Fulori Waqasaqa—demonstrates how passion and resilience can turn dreams into reality. These women exemplify the potential for personal growth and community enhancement through entrepreneurship. Danford’s story—a testament to sacrifice and hard work—encourages others to trust their instincts and build on their skills for success.
