Stevie Wonder’s Heartfelt Plea for Unity at DNC: A Night of Music and Hope

Stevie Wonder took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, delivering an emotional speech and performance in support of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Addressing the large audience at the United Center in Chicago, Wonder expressed his love for the people: “I love you. Every song that I’ve sung, every song that I’ve written is because of my love for you right here.” He urged the audience to seek peace in a troubled world, stating, “This year, I prayed very hard for peace to come to our world’s nations, but also to each one of our hearts, even though our hearts have been beaten and broken beyond prayer.” Wonder emphasized the importance of healing and unity, declaring, “Now is the time to understand where we are and what it will take to win. Win the broken hearts, win the disenchanted, win the angry spirits — now is the time.”

He called on the crowd to “choose courage over complacency” and to strive for unity among the people, before transitioning into his performance. “Are y’all ready to reach a higher ground?” he asked, before performing his classic track “Higher Ground.” Accompanied by dancers in white, Wonder sang a stirring rendition that echoed themes of persistence and hope.

Kamala Harris has been an admirer of Wonder for years, having previously stated that his album “Songs in the Key of Life” is her favorite. In 2020, she honored his birthday with a special post, calling him a “living legend and longtime hero of mine.” Earlier this month, Wonder also acknowledged Harris during a funeral service, declaring her name with heartfelt recognition.
