Stevie Wonder took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday to express his support for Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, delivering both an emotional speech and a performance to the audience at the United Center in Chicago.
Wonder addressed the crowd, saying, “I love you. Every song that I’ve sung, every song that I’ve written is because of my love for you right here.” He shared his wish for peace in the world and within people’s hearts, acknowledging the struggles many have faced. He emphasized the importance of winning over those who feel broken or disillusioned: “Now is the time to understand where we are and what it will take to win.”
He encouraged the audience to “choose courage over complacency” and to continue striving for unity among the people of the United States before transitioning into his musical performance.
“Are y’all ready to reach a higher ground?” he asked before performing his famous song “Higher Ground.” With dancers in white accompanying him, Wonder delivered powerful lyrics that urged perseverance despite adversity.
Harris has long admired Wonder, citing his album, “Songs in the Key of Life,” as her favorite. She even celebrated his birthday in 2020, calling him a “living legend and longtime hero.” Earlier in the month, Wonder paid tribute to Harris during Duke Fakir’s funeral, directly mentioning her name to the crowd, highlighting their connection.
