Steven W. Bailey, well-known for his roles in popular series such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Modern Family,” has bravely shared his long-hidden struggle with a rare health condition. In a heartfelt post on social media platform X, Bailey revealed that he has been living with Congenital Myasthenia Syndrome for over five years, a genetic disorder that significantly impacts muscle strength and stamina.

The actor, recognized for his portrayal of bartender Joe on “Grey’s Anatomy,” expressed that he kept this part of his life private due to career considerations and personal preference. “Out of career caution, diagnostic uncertainty, and being private about such things in general, I have been hiding my battle with this disease for over five years,” he stated. He feels it is now time to come forward, sharing, “Time to stop.”

Congenital myasthenic syndromes are a collection of rare conditions stemming from gene changes that lead to muscle weakness, especially noticeable with physical activity. The Mayo Clinic notes that these syndromes often affect muscles responsible for eye movement, chewing, and swallowing.

Bailey elaborated on the physical challenges he faces due to the disorder, mentioning that his limbs fatigue easily and he experiences difficulties with walking. He has started to use a powered wheelchair more frequently as the disease progresses. “Professionally, this is changing me as an actor,” he noted, while emphasizing that he still participates in scenes that allow him to perform on his feet. However, he acknowledges the need for his work to adapt, stating, “it’s time for my work, like in my life, to start skewing more wheelchair, if you will.”

Expressing optimism about his future in the entertainment industry, Bailey affirmed that he is “done hiding” and is ready for a new chapter in his career, hopeful that there is still a place for him in the industry.

Bailey’s announcement follows that of fellow “Grey’s Anatomy” actor Eric Dane, who disclosed last year his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). During a recent panel, Dane remarked on his challenges, stating that his future roles would likely be centered around his condition but expressing gratitude for being able to continue working.

Bailey, in addition to “Grey’s Anatomy,” has appeared in numerous other celebrated shows, including “Chicago Fire,” “You,” “Scandal,” “Bones,” “NCIS,” “Community,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” He was last seen in the film “Swiped,” featuring Lily James.

Bailey’s courage in sharing his health condition and its impact on his career serves as an inspiration, showcasing resilience and adaptability in the face of life’s challenges.
