Steve Perry, the former lead singer of JOURNEY, has released a heartfelt cover of the band’s iconic power ballad “Faithfully,” featuring the legendary Willie Nelson. This new rendition was recorded at Ronnie’s Place in Nashville and at Perry’s studio, Love Box, with production handled by Kent Wells and Perry himself. The track showcases contributions from various musicians, including Mike Rojas on piano, and Scott Sanders on steel guitar, creating a rich, collaborative sound.
All proceeds from this collaboration will benefit Farm Aid, an organization founded 40 years ago by Nelson, John Mellencamp, and Neil Young to support struggling American family farmers. Perry expressed his admiration for Nelson, stating, “No one has a voice or vocal phrasing anything like Willie Nelson. Singing this duet with Willie has been something I’ve always wanted to do.” Nelson also shared his excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the meaningful nature of their work together.
Originally recorded in 1982, “Faithfully” was released as a single in 1983 and became one of JOURNEY’s most enduring hits, peaking at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jonathan Cain, the band’s keyboardist, started composing the song spontaneously while on a tour bus, leading to its completion in just 30 minutes. This classic ballad has since been recognized as one of the greatest of its genre.
Farm Aid, known for its incredible impact since its inaugural concert in 1985, will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a festival in Minnesota on September 20, featuring performances from notable artists including Nelson, Neil Young, and Dave Matthews. The annual event continues to raise awareness and funds for family farmers, highlighting issues such as sustainable agriculture and the support for rural communities.
This collaboration between Perry and Nelson serves not only as a tribute to a beloved classic but also as a powerful means to support a cause that resonates with many. It showcases how music can bring people together and create positive change in the community.
