In a recent post-game interview following the Golden State Warriors’ 126-116 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day, head coach Steve Kerr expressed his sentiments about former Warriors star Klay Thompson, wishing he was still part of the team. Thompson, who played for Golden State from 2011 until 2024, was instrumental in the franchise’s success during his tenure.

Under Kerr, who took over as head coach in 2014, Thompson established himself as a key player, averaging 19.6 points per game with impressive shooting statistics of 45.3 percent overall and 41.3 percent from beyond the arc. Thompson earned five All-Star selections and was a two-time All-NBA player, contributing significantly to the Warriors’ championship victories in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. His legacy in the Bay Area remains strong, marking him as a true icon of the franchise.

Thompson’s departure to the Mavericks in 2024 on a three-year, $50 million deal has not been without its challenges. The current season has proven difficult for the 35-year-old, as he is averaging just 11 points on 36.9 percent shooting. Speculation about a potential trade has surfaced, with reports indicating that Dallas’s front office is exploring his market ahead of the trade deadline. Thompson’s desire to compete for a championship may complicate his situation, especially with the $17 million contract he has for the next season making him a tricky player to move.

Since joining the Mavericks—who reached the NBA Finals shortly before his arrival—Thompson has witnessed a dramatic shift in the team’s dynamics. Last February, Dallas traded five-time All-NBA guard Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, leading to a disappointing 12-20 start to the current season. As a result, the path to the playoffs appears uncertain for the Mavericks.

Despite the challenges, Thompson remains focused on his goals and the potential for winning. He previously acknowledged the changes in personnel but expressed confidence in the talent still present on his team.

Notably, Thompson’s former teammate, Stephen Curry, has voiced a desire for Thompson to return to Golden State, indicating an openness to a potential reunion if circumstances aligned. Curry remarked, “I wish he was still here,” emphasizing the impact Thompson had on the team and the camaraderie they shared as “Splash Brothers.” Although the idea of Thompson’s return may currently seem far-fetched, both players share a mutual respect and longing for the successful times they experienced together.

As both Thompson and the Mavericks navigate this season, fans continue to hope for brighter days ahead, whether through a resurgence in performance or potential opportunities for Thompson to play for a contender once again.
