Stetson University showcased a dominant performance as they defeated NC State 11–2 in the opening game of the Auburn regional, highlighted by a staggering seven-run first inning at Plainsman Park. The Wolfpack, now holding a record of 33-20, will be watching the contest between Auburn and Central Connecticut, as they prepare to face the loser of that match in a must-win game scheduled for Saturday, May 31 at 2 p.m. CT, which will be broadcast on ESPN+.
NC State’s starting pitcher struggled, making it through only one out and yielding six runs on two hits, with three runs being unearned due to an error. Despite the setback, NC State had moments to regroup; however, they were unable to capitalize, finishing the game 0-6 with runners in scoring position and just 2-15 with runners on base—a stark contrast to Stetson’s effective 6-15 in similar situations.
The Hatters were relentless, maintaining a scoreless performance against NC State until the eighth inning when a solo home run finally put the Wolfpack on the scoreboard, marking the 11th home run of the season for the player. Another freshman contributed with a home run of his own, his second of the season, solidifying their efforts late in the game. Hogue stood out for NC State, delivering three hits, including a double, which was vital in preventing the Wolfpack’s first shutout in a regional since 2016.
Stetson’s pitching was led by Jonathan Gonzalez, who gave an impressive six-inning outing, allowing no runs and only five hits while striking out four. The offense mixed power and plate discipline, compiling 13 hits and drawing nine walks, with four of the first eight batters reaching base via walks, which set the tone for their commanding start.
Despite the challenges faced by NC State’s pitching staff, who used seven pitchers throughout the game, the focus now shifts to regrouping and seizing upcoming chances in the regional competition. Coach expressed disappointment over the starting pitcher’s early performance but emphasized the potential of the team moving forward.
This result brings a sense of urgency for the Wolfpack as they look to rebound in the tournament. With a winning mentality, they have the opportunity to learn from this experience and harness their competitive spirit in future matchups.
