Stephen A. Smith Reconsiders Kyrie Irving COVID-19 Vaccine Stance

Stephen A. Smith is reevaluating his stance on the controversial decision made by Dallas Mavericks player Kyrie Irving to remain unvaccinated during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent appearance on Carmelo Anthony’s podcast, “7PM in Brooklyn,” Smith acknowledged that, in hindsight, Irving may have been “right” about his choice.

Irving’s refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19 led him to miss a significant portion of the 2021-22 NBA season, as he could not comply with New York City’s mandate that required athletes to be vaccinated to participate in indoor events. Despite the backlash he faced, including losing a substantial four-year, $100 million contract extension with the Brooklyn Nets, Irving maintained that his decision was personal and not politically motivated.

Initially, Smith was among Irving’s critics, publicly condemning his lack of vaccination and urging him to consider the impact on his team. On an episode of “First Take” in September 2022, Smith questioned Irving’s commitment to the team, emphasizing a sense of collective responsibility among NBA players.

However, reflecting on those events now, Smith expressed a change of heart. He remarked that in looking back, Irving’s perspective holds merit, especially as various conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccine have emerged. Smith admitted that he did not recognize the underlying concerns at the time.

He also shared his rationale for receiving the vaccine, citing the high stakes involved for professional athletes, team management, and the broader implications of the government’s policies during the pandemic. “We’re all taking the risk,” he said, highlighting his belief that vaccination was a necessary step in light of the circumstances faced by the sports community.

This evolution in Smith’s viewpoint serves as a reminder of the complex discussions surrounding individual choices during the pandemic and the varied perspectives that can emerge over time. It speaks to the ongoing dialogue about personal rights versus community responsibilities in the realm of public health.
