Stephanie Mafili: Carrying Her Family’s Gospel Legacy Into a New Era

Stephanie Mafili’s musical journey is a heartfelt tribute to her family’s rich legacy, centered around faith, harmony, and an enduring passion for music. Growing up as the daughter of the late gospel composer Metuisela Kawa To’amotua Mafili and the niece of former Black Rose vocalist Freddy Kado, Stephanie’s path in music seemed destined. Her father’s passing in 2022 and her uncle’s influence have been fundamental in shaping her musical career.

From a young age, Stephanie’s connection to music was nurtured by her father’s passion and the longstanding family tradition of singing in church. “My father was a well-known pastor and gospel artist, so singing in church was part of our life growing up,” she shared. Her early years were filled with shared melodies created with her father and sisters, including her first recording experience at the tender age of nine.

Stephanie conveys that her family’s musical heritage runs deep, with her father and grandfathers all being singers and composers, a passion that has now been passed down to her. During her university years, her connection to music grew stronger as she and her cousins harmonized together, forming a group named Couź.

Despite her musical upbringing, Stephanie was hesitant about composing music until her father’s encouragement led her to try. Beginning her songwriting journey this year, she describes the process as natural, often starting with lyrics inspired by memories of her father. Although she hasn’t released any songs yet, she is actively working on bringing her compositions to light.

Stephanie’s musical talents, largely honed in the comfort of her home and church, recently took a new turn with her live debut at Gloria Jean’s Cafe alongside her uncle. Performing outside of familiar settings presented challenges, but also offered growth opportunities in maintaining focus and professionalism.

Her uncle Freddy has been a significant mentor, teaching her the technical elements of music and offering invaluable guidance. Following the death of her parents, Freddy also assumed a parental role for Stephanie and her siblings.

Stephanie’s commitment to her father’s legacy is unwavering. Before his death, he entrusted his music to her, a gesture she’s determined to honor by recording his compositions alongside her sisters. Her primary focus is on nurturing her family’s musical journey, with the dream of collaborating with her talented kin.

Though her journey has been difficult, marked by the loss of both parents, Stephanie finds strength in her musical heritage and the close bond she shares with her sisters. Her love for singing the old Fijian songs her father taught her serves as a continual tribute to him.

Stephanie’s story is an inspiring narrative of resilience and dedication to honoring her family’s legacy through music, illustrating her commitment to preserving and sharing the rich musical heritage passed down to her. This journey highlights the power of music as a bridge connecting generations and as a means of keeping cherished memories alive.
