The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated an investigation into approximately 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reports of sudden engine stalls. These vehicles, specifically the 2022 RAM 1500 pickups and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs, have been flagged for experiencing a sudden “loss of motive power” attributed to electrical issues, leading to engine shutdowns. Often, these incidents result in the vehicles shifting into park and activating the emergency brake.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received around 80 complaints from consumers regarding the engine stalls and associated power loss. These vehicles are equipped with the 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines manufactured by Stellantis, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group.
Although no injuries have been reported linked to this malfunction, the NHTSA has opened a preliminary investigation that may pave the way for a recall. Stellantis has stated that it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
This development adds to a series of challenges faced by Stellantis, as brands like Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram experienced a drop in sales during the second quarter. Earlier in the month, the government also began a recall investigation involving 94,000 Jeep Wranglers. Additionally, in June, Stellantis had to recall over 1 million vehicles in North America due to a software defect raising crash risks.
Despite these hurdles, it’s important to consider that this investigation underscores the proactive measures being taken by authorities to ensure consumer safety, and Stellantis’s willingness to cooperate could lead to swift resolutions. As the automotive industry continually evolves, such challenges can pave the way for innovation and stronger safety standards in the future.
