The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated an investigation into approximately 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to issues involving sudden engine stalls and difficulties with restarting. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlighted that the vehicles affected include the 2022 RAM 1500 pickup truck and the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUV. These problems are attributed to electrical issues leading to a loss of engine power.
The NHTSA received around 80 consumer complaints regarding these engine stalls, particularly noting that many incidents occur while the vehicles are moving at low speeds causing them to shift into park and engage the emergency brake. Notably, the models involved are equipped with the Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group’s 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in relation to these incidents so far, and the NHTSA’s preliminary investigation could potentially result in a recall if necessary. Stellantis, the parent company of these brands, has expressed its commitment to cooperating fully with the investigation.
This dilemma comes at a time when Stellantis is already facing challenges, including declining sales across its Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram lines in the second quarter. Earlier this month, they were also involved in a recall investigation for 94,000 Jeep Wranglers. In June, a significant recall impacted over 1 million vehicles in North America due to a software defect that raised crash risks.
Despite these challenges, the proactive steps taken by both the NHTSA and Stellantis reflect a commitment to vehicle safety and consumer well-being, presenting an opportunity for the companies to address these issues and improve their products.
In summary, while the investigation poses difficulties for Stellantis, it also highlights the importance of safety in the automotive industry. By addressing these issues head-on, the company may not only resolve current problems but also reinforce consumer trust in the long run.
