The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated an investigation into around 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reports of unexpected engine stalls, an issue that can leave these vehicles unable to restart. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified that the 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs are particularly affected, citing problems linked to electrical malfunctions that could lead to the engine shutting down.
The NHTSA has recorded 80 consumer complaints detailing incidents in which the engine shuts off unexpectedly, notably when the vehicles are moving at low speeds. In such cases, the vehicles may shift into park and activate the emergency brake. The affected vehicles are equipped with the 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines from the Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group (FCA).
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries stemming from this issue. The NHTSA’s preliminary inquiry could progress to a formal recall if necessary. Stellantis, the manufacturer behind these brands, has stated that it is fully cooperating with the investigation.
This investigation comes during a challenging period for Stellantis, as sales for its Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram brands fell in the second quarter. Additionally, earlier this month, another recall investigation was launched for 94,000 Jeep Wranglers, and in June, Stellantis had to recall over 1 million vehicles in North America due to a software bug that posed safety risks.
In summary, while the current situation poses challenges for Stellantis, the company’s commitment to cooperating with regulations and safety investigations sustains hope for consumers who rely on these vehicles. It highlights the importance of addressing safety concerns in the automotive industry, ensuring that customer safety remains a top priority.
