The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated an investigation into approximately 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reports of sudden engine stalls. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified that 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs are experiencing electrical issues causing a sudden “loss of motive power,” frequently leading to the engine shutting down and intermittent restart capabilities.
In total, the NHTSA has received around 80 consumer complaints regarding engine stalls and power loss in vehicles produced by Stellantis, which are equipped with the 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines from Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group LLC (FCA). Many complaints have indicated that when the engine shuts off—sometimes while driving at low speeds—the vehicle automatically shifts into park and engages the emergency brake.
Thus far, there have been no reported injuries linked to this malfunction. The NHTSA’s preliminary investigation could potentially lead to a recall, and Stellantis has stated that it is fully cooperating with authorities.
This investigation comes at a challenging time for Stellantis, as the company has faced declining sales figures for its Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram brands in the second quarter. Additionally, earlier this month, the government initiated a recall investigation for 94,000 Jeep Wranglers, and in June, over 1 million vehicles were recalled due to a software defect that elevated the risk of crashes.
Despite these difficulties, it’s important to note Stellantis’s proactive approach to addressing safety concerns and cooperating with regulatory bodies. This commitment could ultimately enhance vehicle reliability and consumer trust in the long run.
In summary, while Stellantis faces significant challenges with engine stall investigations and recent recalls, their cooperation with investigations may pave the way for improved safety measures and solutions for affected consumers.
