The US Department of Transportation revealed on Monday that it is investigating approximately 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reports of sudden engine stalls that often result in the vehicles failing to restart.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicated that 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs are facing an unexpected “loss of motive power” related to electrical issues that cause engine shutdowns, with intermittent capabilities to restart.
The Office of Defects Investigation noted receiving 80 consumer complaints concerning engine stalls and loss of power in the vehicles produced by Stellantis. These vehicles utilize the Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group LLC (FCA) 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines.
The NHTSA detailed that many complaints report the engine shutting off, particularly when driving at slow speeds, with the vehicle unexpectedly shifting into park and applying the emergency brake.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported as a result of this malfunction. The NHTSA has initiated a preliminary investigation that may lead to a recall. Stellantis confirmed it is fully cooperating with the inquiry.
This investigation adds to the challenges faced by Stellantis, as sales for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram fell during the second quarter.
Earlier this month, the government commenced a recall investigation involving 94,000 Jeep Wranglers. Additionally, in June, the company had to recall over 1 million vehicles in North America due to a software error that potentially heightened the risk of accidents.
