The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated an investigation into approximately 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reports of sudden engine stalls and challenges in restarting the vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has specifically flagged the 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs, which are experiencing unexpected “loss of motive power” attributed to electrical issues that cause the engine to shut down, with intermittent capability for restarting.
The investigation was prompted by 80 consumer complaints regarding engine stalls and power loss in these Stellantis-manufactured vehicles, which are equipped with the 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines from Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group LLC (FCA). Numerous complaints highlighted incidents where the engine would turn off, particularly at low speeds, leading the vehicle to shift into park and engage the emergency brake.
Thankfully, there have been no reported injuries linked to these malfunctions, and the NHTSA’s preliminary investigation could potentially culminate in a recall. Stellantis has confirmed that it is fully cooperating with the investigation.
This investigation is part of a series of challenges faced by Stellantis, as the company has reported declining sales for its Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram brands in the second quarter. Earlier this month, the government also opened a recall investigation involving 94,000 Jeep Wranglers, and in June, more than 1 million vehicles were recalled in North America due to a software bug that heightened the risk of a crash.
In light of these challenges, it’s essential for Stellantis to address these safety concerns proactively. Ongoing cooperation with regulatory bodies can help restore consumer confidence and ultimately lead to safer vehicles on the road. The situation presents an opportunity for Stellantis to reaffirm its commitment to quality and safety, paving the way for a potential turnaround in consumer perception and sales performance.
Summary: The U.S. Department of Transportation is investigating 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs over engine stall issues, prompting NHTSA reviews following numerous consumer complaints. The action, while another challenge for Stellantis amid declining sales and prior recalls, offers a chance for the company to enhance safety protocols and regain consumer trust.
