The U.S. Department of Transportation has initiated an investigation involving around 150,000 Ram trucks and Jeep SUVs due to reports of sudden engine stalls that often prevent the vehicles from restarting. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified that the 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUVs are undergoing issues linked to electrical problems causing unexpected engine shutdowns.

This investigation was prompted by 80 consumer complaints regarding engine stalls and loss of power, particularly affecting vehicles equipped with the 5.7L Hemi eTorque hybrid engines manufactured by Stellantis. Many drivers reported instances where their vehicle’s engine would turn off unexpectedly, sometimes while driving at low speeds. In such situations, the vehicles would shift into park and engage the emergency brake.

Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries related to these malfunctions. The NHTSA has opened a preliminary inquiry, which may lead to a vehicle recall. Stellantis has indicated its commitment to cooperating with the investigation.

This latest investigation presents ongoing challenges for Stellantis, as sales for brands such as Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram have been showing a decline in recent quarters. Earlier this month, another recall investigation was launched for 94,000 Jeep Wranglers, and in June, the company had to recall over 1 million vehicles in North America due to a software problem that increased crash risk.

In light of these events, it is essential for manufacturers to prioritize safety and address consumer concerns promptly. While the investigation may be concerning, it reflects the regulatory processes in place aimed at ensuring vehicle safety and the company’s accountability to its consumers. With Stellantis’s ongoing cooperation, there is hope for a prompt resolution and reinforcement of consumer trust in their vehicles.
