Stefon Diggs’ Future with Patriots in Doubt After Controversial Incident

Could the Stefon Diggs era in New England be in jeopardy before it even properly begins?

The Patriots’ offseason acquisition has recently found himself in the spotlight for troubling reasons. A video emerged showing Diggs celebrating on a boat during Memorial Day Weekend, accompanied by three women and with an unidentified pink substance nearby. This incident has raised eyebrows and led Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel to emphasize the necessity of making “great decisions on and off the field” before practice on Wednesday.

Compounding matters, Diggs has been absent from voluntary sessions at Gillette Stadium due to rehabilitation from a torn ACL, which has raised questions about his future with the team. Signed to a lucrative three-year, $69 million contract, the prospect of the Patriots releasing the star wide receiver seems more tangible than some may have anticipated.

Scott Zolak from 98.5 The Sports Hub pointed out on his show that discussions surrounding Diggs’ potential release are indeed taking place. He suggested that the issue goes beyond the controversial boat video, indicating a concern about Diggs’ overall commitment. Zolak expressed belief in Diggs’ value to the team, particularly in aiding young quarterback Drake Maye by providing a reliable number-one target, stating that the absence of a receiver who can demand coverage is a significant shortcoming for the offense.

Diggs, a seasoned 10-year veteran and four-time Pro Bowler, was brought on to elevate a struggling Patriots’ wide receiver group. Last season, he registered 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns in just eight games with the Houston Texans before his ACL injury. If he can fully recover, Diggs offers a prime opportunity for the Patriots to enhance their passing game.

Still, concerns about his presence impacting team culture cannot be overlooked, especially as Vrabel looks to instill a positive environment during his inaugural season as head coach. As it stands, the Patriots’ receiver lineup also includes DeMario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne, Mack Hollins, Kayshon Boutte, Ja’Lynn Polk, and Javon Baker, making Diggs’ role even more critical.

Amidst these challenges, fans remain hopeful that Diggs can turn things around and focus on contributing positively to the team’s success this upcoming season.
