A challenging season last year left Stefanos Tsitsipas grappling with a debilitating back injury that impacted not only his performance but also his love for the sport. Now, the world No. 32 is focused on reclaiming both his form and joy in tennis as he embarks on the 2026 season.
In a recent exclusive interview with Nicholas Albek of Bolavip after his victory over eighth-seeded Arthur Rinderknech in Rotterdam, Tsitsipas reflected on his struggles. He admitted that the severity of his back injury at times made him feel more like a spectator than a competitor on the ATP Tour. “I had a big period without playing tennis… I felt like I was away from the court and the competition,” he shared, capturing the frustration he experienced during his lengthy recovery.
The 27-year-old’s discomfort was so intense that he could not advance past the second round in any of his final nine tournaments in 2025. His season concluded with a heartbreaking loss to Daniel Altmaier at the US Open, and he played only two matches thereafter, both in Davis Cup competitions, before deciding to end his season early.
After starting 2025 ranked No. 11, Tsitsipas saw his position drop to No. 32 as he struggled with a back problem that plagued him throughout all four Grand Slam tournaments, which he failed to progress past the second round. However, there is a bright side; he expressed optimism about his recovery, noting that he managed to train pain-free in December, which gives him hope for a healthier playing experience this year.
Tsitsipas is off to a promising start in 2026, boasting a 7-2 record that includes notable wins against Taylor Fritz and Rinderknech. As he prepares to face Botic van der Zandschulp in Rotterdam, the pivotal question remains: can he maintain his health and continue to enjoy the game?
Despite the uncertainty that loomed over him, even during moments of previous success, Tsitsipas remains hopeful. “The game becomes less important and health becomes the most important thing in your life,” he stated, emphasizing that he learned to prioritize his health above all else in facing the challenges of the past. With his renewed focus and determination, there’s a growing sense of optimism as he marches forward into the new season.
