President-elect Donald Trump has selected Rep. Elise Stefanik from New York, the current House Republican Conference chair and a long-time supporter, to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in his upcoming Cabinet. This marks Trump’s first Cabinet nomination in his second term.

In a statement, Trump expressed his pride in nominating Stefanik, describing her as a strong, intelligent advocate for an “America First” approach. Stefanik, 40, acknowledged the honor, stating her readiness to champion Trump’s vision for American leadership on the global stage from her new position at the UN.

Stefanik has been an ardent supporter of Israel, especially regarding its actions following the Hamas attacks on October 7, and has voiced concerns about rising antisemitism in U.S. colleges. Ahead of the recent election, she called for the defunding of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, alleging its infiltration by Hamas elements. This call comes amid accusations from Israel regarding the complicity of some agency staff in the recent attacks. The Israeli parliament has already taken steps to halt operations of the agency by terminating several employees.

Since May 2021, Stefanik has chaired the House Republican Conference, rising to prominence after her predecessor was ousted for criticism of Trump. She has represented New York’s 21st Congressional District since 2015, covering parts of upstate New York.

However, potential appointments by Trump, which could cause vacancies in the House, may present challenges for House Republicans, who are navigating a narrow control of the chamber following the election—results of which remain unresolved.

As Trump’s Cabinet begins to take shape, it reflects a continuing commitment to his established policies and partnerships. The selection of Stefanik not only highlights her significant role in supporting Republican principles but also indicates a focus on issues such as national security and international relations that resonate with many voters. This new appointment could foster a stronger presence for the U.S. on the international stage, particularly in advocating for allies like Israel and addressing pressing global challenges.
