PITTSBURGH — Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin stated on Tuesday that quarterback Russell Wilson is being considered to start against the New York Jets on Sunday, following his return to health and a productive practice week. Tomlin indicated that the decision between Wilson and Justin Fields as the starting quarterback will be made closer to game time.
Tomlin expressed confidence in Wilson’s health and noted that the focus now is on getting him back into game shape. “He is in consideration this week. We’ll see where that leads us,” Tomlin said, adding that both quarterbacks are scheduled to practice on Wednesday as they prepare for the game.
The possibility of utilizing both quarterbacks during the game remains open. “Certainly there’s a scenario,” Tomlin remarked, referencing the potential to use both players as early as last week.
Wilson, 35, participated fully in practice for the first time since aggravating an injury during training camp on September 5. He was active in the previous game against the Las Vegas Raiders, while Fields recorded his sixth start of the season.
“Wilson proved his ability to protect himself and move appropriately within the pocket,” Tomlin said. “Those things had to happen before we could seriously consider him and his talents.”
Tomlin has consistently labeled Wilson as the starting quarterback throughout his injury period, but he was noncommittal about the exact practice plan for the week. He mentioned that a decision about which quarterback would get the first-team reps would be made later.
With Fields as the starter, the Steelers have a 4-2 record, including a win against the Raiders, where he rushed for two touchdowns. Fields has recorded five passing touchdowns against one interception and one fumble, completing 66.3% of his passes. However, his QBR ranks 20th among all quarterbacks, and the Steelers sit 28th in passing yards per game.
“Justin has been really good, but we need to strive for greatness,” Tomlin said. He acknowledged Fields’ contributions, particularly his versatility as a runner, and emphasized that the team is exploring all options available.
Fields ranks fourth among quarterbacks in rushing yards and leads the league with five rushing touchdowns this season, a record for Steelers quarterbacks since Kordell Stewart in 2001.
When asked if Wilson possesses the same running ability as Fields, Tomlin responded directly, stating, “No, he does not. Justin’s legs are an X factor.”
Regarding how the offense might change with Wilson at the helm, Tomlin concluded, “It remains to be seen.”
