The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a significant move during this typically quiet time in the NFL, agreeing to a two-year, $12.5 million contract extension with veteran safety DeShon Elliott. This extension, which includes $9.21 million guaranteed, comes just after the team’s minicamp and with training camp on the horizon.
The 28-year-old Elliott was originally set to enter the last year of a two-year, $6 million deal signed last offseason. However, this new deal not only secures his future with the Steelers but also provides him with financial stability as he continues to contribute to the team’s defense.
In his first season with Pittsburgh, Elliott had an impressive performance, achieving career-highs with 108 tackles, three fumble recoveries, and matching his best with two forced fumbles and one interception.
Elliott’s journey in the NFL began in 2019 when he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens as a sixth-round pick. He played three seasons in Baltimore before spending one season each with the Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins.
Currently, Elliott plays a vital role in a Steelers secondary that combines youthful talent with seasoned experience, alongside standout players like perennial Pro Bowlers Minkah Fitzpatrick and Darius Slay. The unit has also been enhanced with the addition of 2023 second-round pick Joey Porter Jr. and Beanie Bishop Jr., a second-year nickelback. The Steelers further fortified their secondary this offseason by signing free agents Slay, Juan Thornhill, and Brandin Echols.
This strategic move not only highlights the Steelers’ commitment to building a solid defense but also indicates confidence in Elliott’s capabilities, suggesting a promising season ahead for both the player and the team.
