Steelers land Asante Samuel Jr. to bolster secondary after spinal fusion comeback

Asante Samuel Jr. is set to join the Pittsburgh Steelers, marking a significant development for the team following his recovery from spinal fusion surgery. This comes just a week after the cornerback was medically cleared to resume football activities. Samuel, a former second-round pick by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021, had a challenging season last year, participating in only four games due to shoulder issues, which he likened to having a stinger.

The surgery, performed by neurosurgeon Dr. David Okonkwo, has paved the way for his return to the field. Over the course of his three seasons with the Chargers, Samuel tallied two interceptions in each year, and he made a notable impact during the 2022 AFC wild-card playoff game with three interceptions and six pass breakups.

Samuel’s signing comes at a crucial time for Pittsburgh, which is grappling with injuries in its cornerback squad. Starting cornerback Darius Slay is currently in concussion protocol following an injury sustained in the Week 9 loss against the Chargers. Additionally, the Steelers are dealing with reduced depth after Jalen Ramsey transitioned to free safety to cover for DeShon Elliott, who has been placed on injured reserve.

The 26-year-old cornerback will bolster the Steelers’ secondary, joining the likes of Joey Porter Jr. — who secured an interception in the Week 9 victory over the Colts — as well as Brandin Echols and veteran James Pierre.

Samuel’s move to Pittsburgh coincides with the recent acquisition of Kyle Dugger, who has already made a significant impact at strong safety. Dugger was recognized with a game ball for his performance, contributing on nearly every defensive play against the Colts in his debut. Additionally, the Steelers have re-signed undrafted rookie Sebastian Castro after a brief spell with the Buccaneers, while veteran safety Juan Thornhill was released.

As the Steelers prepare to face the Bengals and quarterback Joe Flacco, who previously had a standout performance against them in Week 7, Samuel’s presence could add much-needed strength to their struggling defense. With Samuel on board, there is renewed hope that the Steelers can turn around their season and improve their performance in the upcoming games.
