Stars Shine at the American Century Championship: What’s New This Year?

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – July 9 marked the kickoff of the American Century Championship (ACC) at Edgewood Tahoe, featuring a day filled with practice rounds and celebrity appearances. As fans flocked to see their favorite stars, many celebrities participated in a Celeb-Am format to prepare for the main event starting Friday.

Among the early arrivals at Hole 10 were New Orleans Saints Safety Justin Reid, TV Host Chris Harrison, former NHL All-Star Joe Pavelski, country singer Jake Owen, and former NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The group entertained fans requesting photos and autographs as they practiced their swings.

Defending champion Mardy Fish, a former professional tennis star, expressed that he doesn’t feel the weight of pressure in his title defense this year, sharing the distinction with Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry, who is unable to participate due to Olympic commitments. Fish, a veteran of the ACC, referred to the event as his “favorite week of the year,” highlighting the family-friendly atmosphere and enjoyable activities available for all ages.

“It’s great here. My kids love it too—especially the lake. We’ve got boating, yummy food, and a fantastic overall experience,” Fish said.

As the afternoon unfolded, the second round of Celeb-Am began, featuring a star-studded lineup, including Colin Jost of Saturday Night Live, former MLB pitcher Roger Clemens, comedian Larry the Cable Guy, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, and Lakers shooting guard Austin Reaves.

Fan-favorite Steph Curry also made an appearance, engaging with fans as he was escorted from hole to hole. The excitement around Curry was palpable as he paused to sign autographs, delighting those who came out to watch.

The day wrapped up with insightful interview panels featuring prominent women in sports, including WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and “Today Show” Anchor Dylan Dreyer. They discussed their hopes of inspiring young girls in the male-centric environment of the tournament and voiced support for fellow competitor, Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam.

As the tournament progresses, American Century Investment leaders and former NFL quarterback Joe Theismann announced the introduction of innovative AI technology for a new competition called “Smash for Cash.” This new feature, which measures swing statistics through the “smash factor,” aims to add an exciting element to the event.

With more practice rounds on deck for Thursday, excitement is building for the official competition starting Friday. The ACC not only showcases athletic talent but serves as a platform for camaraderie and inspiration, promising a thrilling experience for both participants and fans alike.
