The Democratic National Convention resumed on Tuesday evening at the United Center in Chicago, where more musical artists took the stage to honor Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential nomination.
Patti LaBelle captivated the audience with her 1978 hit “You Are My Friend” during a segment dedicated to those who have passed, singing heartfelt lines that expressed gratitude for friendship. The renowned singer previously delivered a powerful rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” at the 2004 DNC and recently performed at President Biden’s Juneteenth concert on the White House South Lawn.
Common also graced the stage, showcasing his latest collaboration “Fortunate” with Pete Rock. He made a memorable moment by altering the lyrics to resonate with the crowd, saying, “Be fortunate, y’all, for Kamala Harris.” Common has previously participated in DNC events, including a virtual performance during the 2020 ceremony alongside John Legend, where they performed their Oscar-winning song “Glory” from the film Selma.
The theme for the second night of the DNC was “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” featuring remarks from notable figures including former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. Commentator Ana Navarro hosted the evening.
Harris has now taken over the nomination from President Biden, who addressed the convention on its opening night. Recent polls indicate a slight shift in favor of Harris, as she begins to draw support in key battleground states previously leaning towards Republican nominee Donald Trump.
