Stars Shine at Disney Legends Ceremony: An Emotional Celebration

Harrison Ford and Miley Cyrus were among the stars who became emotional while accepting the prestigious Disney Legends honor in Anaheim, California, on Sunday. This year, Disney recognized 14 artists for their significant contributions to the company’s legacy, including renowned figures like director James Cameron, composer John Williams, and actors Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Kelly Ripa.

The induction ceremony took place at The Honda Center during the D23 fan convention, with Ryan Seacrest serving as the event’s host, which is now available for streaming on Disney+. Ford opened the ceremony by humbly referring to himself as an “assistant storyteller,” emphasizing the collaborative nature of his career.

Ford expressed gratitude towards Disney CEO Bob Iger, who presented him with the award, acknowledging the guidance and support he has received. The beloved actor, known for iconic roles in “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars,” is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World.”

Cyrus, emotional during her acceptance speech, reflected on the fear involved in performing. She encouraged others to embrace their fears, remarking, “There’s no such thing as failure when you try.” The crowd enjoyed a lively performance of “The Best of Both Worlds” by Lainey Wilson, paying homage to Cyrus’s early work in “Hannah Montana.” As the youngest recipient of the Legends award, Cyrus has continued her successful music career since that show’s debut in 2006, recently winning her first Grammy Award.

Angela Bassett, known for her roles in the “Black Panther” films, received her award from Ryan Coogler, the director of those films. She expressed deep appreciation for the fans who have supported her throughout her career.

Jamie Lee Curtis was honored by Lindsay Lohan and Jodie Foster, with Foster praising Curtis as “inventive and fearless.” Curtis shared her belief that legends are made through creativity and nurture.

Ford returned to the stage to highlight John Williams, the iconic composer of films like “Jurassic Park” and “Jaws,” calling him the creator of the “soundtrack of our lives.” The Pacific Symphony performed a medley of Williams’ music in his absence.

James Cameron was celebrated by Kate Winslet and Zoe Saldaña, who praised the incredible creativity represented at the event, while Ripa reflected on her long-standing career with Disney that spans over three decades.

Danny DeVito praised James L. Brooks, emphasizing his genius in storytelling. Disney also recognized six behind-the-scenes creatives for their substantial contributions to their films and experiences, including Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood and animator Mark Henn.

With more than 300 honorees since the program’s launch in 1987, Disney Legends includes notable figures like Elton John, Steve Jobs, and Betty White.
