This past month, Massachusetts welcomed a trio of celebrities – André 3000, Jennifer Coolidge, and Sara Bareilles – who each delivered commencement addresses to graduating students at various colleges in Boston.
Jennifer Coolidge, known for her recent role in “A Minecraft Movie” and her iconic performances, spoke at Emerson College, where she herself graduated in 1985. Coolidge infused her speech with humor and inspiration, encouraging graduates to disregard those who misrepresent their stories. “Don’t listen to the people who mess up the real story you’ve got going,” she emphasized, expressing pride in the Class of 2025 and suggesting they take time to relax and celebrate their achievements.
At Berklee College of Music, André 3000 (André Benjamin) took to the stage, reflecting on his journey with Outkast and urging graduates to remain passionate about their work. He received an honorary doctorate of music, underscoring his influence in the industry. “You are the futures, and I’m excited to hear how y’all hear things,” he stated, reminding students to stay focused and not be swayed by external opinions.
Fellow honoree Sara Bareilles also delivered her address at Berklee, emphasizing the profound impact of music and art. She candidly shared her insights into the challenges faced in the music industry, including the threats posed by artificial intelligence and political influences. “There are so many trap doors, but there are so many trampolines,” she told graduates, encouraging them to embrace their authentic selves despite the uncertainties they may encounter.
