Residents of Lakeba have long grappled with accessing reliable internet, often hindered by weak signals and prolonged wait times. Fortunately, this issue is being addressed with the recent installation of Starlink satellite kits on the island, heralding a significant improvement in internet connectivity.
The integration of Starlink technology is expected to transform various facets of life for Lakeba’s residents, including education, healthcare, safety, and local economic opportunities. Mele Uluiqalau, a student at the University of the South Pacific, expressed her appreciation for this advancement, noting its profound impact on local youth who depend on the internet for their studies. “I want to thank the Government and especially the International Organization for Migration for installing the Starlink kits on the island. This will really benefit villagers on Lakeba, especially students who rely on the internet for research projects and studies,” Uluiqalau stated.
Kelepi Gucake, the Mata ni Tikina for Lakeba and a retired serviceman, underscored the importance of enhanced connectivity for both communication and safety within the community. He mentioned that the new system would significantly improve the effectiveness of communication and early-warning systems, especially during cyclone season. Additionally, Gucake noted the potential boost for local tourism, as better internet access will enable communities to market their attractions more efficiently and engage with prospective visitors online.
Healthcare services on Lakeba are also set to see improvements. The local hospital is likely to benefit from enhanced connectivity, enabling medical professionals to provide better support and care to patients. Ledua Finau, the Mata ni Tikina Fulaga, emphasized the importance of this initiative, particularly as remote islands face increasing challenges from climate change.
