For families residing on Lakeba, accessing reliable internet has historically been a challenge, reliant on weak signals and extended wait times. However, this situation is set to improve significantly with the recent installation of Starlink satellite kits on the island, marking a new era of dependable internet access.

The introduction of Starlink technology is poised to revolutionize various aspects of life on Lakeba, including education, health services, safety measures, and economic opportunities for the island’s residents. University of the South Pacific student Mele Uluiqalau expressed her gratitude for the initiative, stating that this new service would profoundly impact local youth pursuing education from such remote locations. “I want to thank the Government and especially the International Organization for Migration for installing the Starlink kits on the island. This will really benefit villagers on Lakeba, especially students who rely on the internet for research projects and studies,” she remarked.

Kelepi Gucake, the Mata ni Tikina for Lakeba and a retired serviceman, emphasized the importance of the new connectivity for communication and safety. He highlighted that it would greatly enhance the community’s communication capabilities and the effectiveness of early-warning systems during cyclone season. Furthermore, Gucake noted the potential for boosting local tourism, as improved internet service will aid communities in marketing their attractions and connecting with visitors online.

Health services on the island are also expected to benefit from enhanced connectivity. The Lakeba Island Hospital will be better equipped to support medical professionals in delivering improved care to patients. Ledua Finau, the Mata ni Tikina Fulaga, stated that this donation comes at a vital time, particularly as climate change increasingly impacts remote islands.

The introduction of Starlink satellite technology stands as a beacon of hope for the Lakeba community, facilitating better education, healthcare, and economic prospects while also enhancing their resilience against climate-related challenges.
