Digicel Fiji has entered into a partnership with the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF) to enhance mobile and digital connectivity for remote communities in the Lau Group. This initiative is a component of the government’s Universal Service Obligation programme, aimed at linking underserved areas with essential services, economic opportunities, and digital markets that have been previously inaccessible.
TAF Chairman David Eyre emphasized that universal connectivity serves as a vital catalyst for inclusive social and economic development. He noted that the project incorporates government-led satellite Wi-Fi infrastructure, including cutting-edge Starlink technology, to ensure connectivity even in Fiji’s most isolated regions.
Digicel Fiji’s Chief Executive Farid Mohammed expressed that this deployment marks a significant advancement towards fulfilling their commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age. He stated that connecting these remote areas could stimulate economic growth, enhance access to healthcare and education, and promote financial inclusion for thousands of Fijians.
Furthermore, Mohammed highlighted that the collaboration involves close coordination among Digicel, TAF, and the Ministry of Finance, with established Service Level Agreements that guarantee the delivery of robust, high-quality services tailored for Fiji’s challenging geographic landscape. This initiative holds the potential to transform lives and uplift communities by bridging the connectivity gap in Fiji.
