Starliner’s Thrusters Pass Crucial Tests: What’s Next for the Crew?

The crew of Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft has received promising news regarding their return to Earth. Recently, comprehensive ground testing of the spacecraft’s thrusters was concluded, marking an important milestone for both Boeing and NASA. The thrusters had kept Starliner in orbit since early June, as the teams awaited the results of these crucial tests before outlining a strategy for its return journey.

The updates reveal that testing of the Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters took place at the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. The primary goal of this testing was to assess thruster degradation, which aims to clarify the reasons behind the in-flight failure of some thrusters, referred to as “de-selected.” These failures were linked to leaks in the helium tanks that control the thrusters, causing several delays in the mission.

Despite having 70 hours of helium available — far more than the required seven hours — the spacecraft officials noted that, although the Starliner could technically return to Earth at this moment, preparations are not fully complete. The latest communication from NASA and Boeing indicates that while they had previously suggested a potential return by the end of the month, the timeline has become less specific.

Moving forward, Boeing and NASA engineers will disassemble and inspect the thrusters, and finalize their flight rationale to ensure a safe return for the crew, which includes commander Butch Wilmore and pilot Suni Williams, in the upcoming weeks. This positive development holds promise for the team, who remain dedicated to ensuring a successful mission and safe return.

This progress exemplifies the resilience and dedication of the aerospace teams involved, reinforcing the importance of thorough testing and evaluation in space missions. As they work towards a successful return, it is a reminder that careful preparation can lead to favorable outcomes, even in challenging circumstances.
