Starc urges bowler-friendly pitches to protect Test cricket ahead of the Ashes

Australia’s fast bowler Mitchell Starc has called on pitch curators to create bowler-friendly conditions ahead of the highly anticipated Ashes series against England, emphasizing the importance of maintaining competitive balance over financial considerations. As the English team gears up to employ their aggressive “Bazball” method, Starc raised concerns that excessively flat pitches aimed at prolonging matches for revenue could diminish the true spirit of Test cricket.

In the previous home summer, Australia secured a 3-1 series victory against India on surfaces that were conducive to both batters and bowlers, and Starc expressed a desire for that trend to continue in the forthcoming five-match series. “I hope the groundsmen stick to their guns and prepare the wickets they want. If we are worried about five days of revenue then there’s bigger problems at hand,” he remarked.

Starc recently showcased his bowling prowess by taking four wickets in a Sheffield Shield match for New South Wales on a less-than-responsive pitch, which he noted could be more advantageous for the England batsmen given their aggressive playstyle. “Yeah no doubt. Especially if they’re pretty docile wickets like this,” he said. The seasoned left-armer acknowledged that while his return to form in first-class cricket is encouraging, the upcoming match-ups against England will be critical.

The 35-year-old, who recently decided to step away from T20 international cricket to extend his Test career, reported feeling back in rhythm after extended time away from red-ball cricket and is optimistic as the Ashes series opener in Perth approaches on November 21. Starc stated, “I think the break was a good thing, but I just tend to be someone who continuous bowling keeps in rhythm.”

Starc’s insights mirror the broader discussions within Australian cricket about the importance of competitive pitches, especially as the landscape of the sport continues to evolve. Cricket Australia has previously acknowledged the need to balance the financial viability of Test matches with the integrity and appeal of the format, particularly as franchises and shorter formats gain exposure.

The anticipation surrounding the Ashes series illustrates the ongoing commitment of players and administrators to preserve the thrilling nature of Test cricket. With Starc and his teammates focused on putting forth their best performances against an ever-evolving England side, cricket fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive series, emphasizing the passion and excitement that defines the game.
