Starbucks has announced a significant reversal of its open-door policy that allowed non-paying guests to access its facilities. Starting Monday, customers who enter any company-owned store in North America will now be required to make a purchase if they wish to use the restroom or utilize the Wi-Fi. The new “Coffeehouse Code of Conduct,” which will be prominently displayed in U.S. locations, outlines additional prohibitions including discrimination, harassment, outside alcohol consumption, smoking, drug use, and panhandling. Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson emphasized that while customers may still need to use the restroom or connect to the Internet before ordering, the goal is to ensure that the cafés, patios, and restrooms are primarily focused on serving customers and employees.

This policy shift comes under the new leadership of CEO Brian Niccol, who recently committed to enhancing the overall customer experience by refocusing on what makes Starbucks special. Niccol underscored the importance of creating a welcoming atmosphere where people can gather over quality coffee, acknowledging that some experiences have felt too transactional or inconsistent.

The change marks a return to a more traditional café experience, reminiscent of Starbucks’ previous practices prior to 2018. That year, the coffee chain faced significant backlash after an incident in Philadelphia where two Black men were arrested for trespassing while waiting for a friend without making a purchase. The incident highlighted issues of racial profiling and prompted changes within the company’s policies, which included allowing non-paying guests to use facilities. Starbucks settled a lawsuit with the men involved, highlighting the complex conversation surrounding race and access to space.

As Starbucks moves forward, this new policy is intended to ensure a respectful and customer-focused environment. With a renewed commitment to its core values, Starbucks aims to reclaim its identity as a community gathering place renowned for high-quality coffee and a welcoming atmosphere.
