Starbucks has announced a significant change to its store policies, reversing its open-door approach that has been in place for nearly seven years. The coffee chain now requires customers to make a purchase if they wish to stay in its locations or use the restrooms.

Effective immediately, the new code of conduct will be displayed in all company-owned stores across North America. The policy will prohibit behaviors including discrimination, harassment, outside food and drink consumption, smoking, vaping, drug use, and panhandling.

This policy shift marks a return to more restrictive practices after an incident in 2018 when two Black men were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks while waiting for a business meeting. The incident drew widespread criticism and led to the implementation of the open-door policy aimed at making Starbucks a welcoming environment for everyone.

Under the leadership of Brian Niccol, who was brought in last year from Chipotle, Starbucks aims to revitalize its brand and enhance the atmosphere of its shops. Niccol has expressed a commitment to fostering a welcoming environment where customers feel encouraged to linger. Jaci Anderson, a Starbucks spokesperson, stated that the updated policies are intended to prioritize the comfort and safety of paying customers, aligning with practices already in place at most other retailers.

The new policy also allows stores to call law enforcement when necessary and includes training for staff on how to effectively enforce these rules. The decision comes in response to increasing instances of disruptive behavior observed in stores over recent years. Starbucks faced safety challenges, leading to the closure of several locations due to incidents related to drug use and other risky behaviors.

The decision to enforce stricter policies reflects broader societal issues, including rising mental health challenges and homelessness exacerbated by the pandemic. As the company aims to navigate these complex issues, it remains committed to balancing the needs of its customers while maintaining a safe, inviting atmosphere in its coffee shops.
