Starbucks has announced a significant policy shift, restoring a requirement for customers to make a purchase in order to linger in its coffee shops or use restrooms. This new code of conduct, which will be implemented in all company-owned stores across North America, marks a reversal from the open-door policy established in 2018 following a highly publicized incident in Philadelphia.

The previous policy was initiated after two Black men were arrested for sitting in a Starbucks without making a purchase while waiting for a business meeting. The incident highlighted issues of discrimination and sparked a broader discussion about inclusivity in public spaces. The new rules aim to create a safer and more welcoming environment, according to Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson, who emphasized that these guidelines align with practices already adopted by many other retailers.

The revised code of conduct will also prohibit harassment or discrimination, as well as the consumption of outside alcohol, smoking, vaping, drug use, and panhandling. Additionally, if individuals violate these rules, they may be asked to leave, and law enforcement could be contacted when necessary.

This policy change comes under the leadership of Brian Niccol, who took the helm last year with a mission to revitalize the struggling coffee giant. Niccol has stated that his vision is to transform Starbucks locations into inviting spaces for community engagement.

The coffee chain acknowledges that they want to maintain a balance between serving customers and allowing necessary use of facilities like bathrooms or Wi-Fi even before a purchase. However, the overarching goal is to enhance the experience for paying customers and ensure a comfortable atmosphere for everyone.

Starbucks has faced challenges related to unruly behaviors in its stores, which have risen since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly affecting mental health and increasing instances of homelessness. In light of this, the company has closed multiple locations due to safety concerns over disruptive behavior.

The implementation of these new rules could potentially improve the overall atmosphere in Starbucks outlets, allowing for a more positive environment for customers and staff alike. While the changes may face some criticism, the focus on creating a welcoming and safe experience is a hopeful step towards addressing ongoing challenges faced by many retailers in today’s societal landscape.
