Paris concluded two and a half extraordinary weeks of Olympic sports and excitement with a star-studded show at the Stade de France and from Long Beach, California. The French capital handed over the responsibility of organizing the Summer Games to the next host city: Los Angeles 2028.
Participants attended the closing ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics at Stade de France on Sunday, August 11, 2024, in Saint-Denis, France. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dr. Dre, Billie Eilish, and Snoop Dogg, who captivated audiences in Paris with multiple NBC appearances, kept the energy alive with a pre-recorded show from California, their home state. After performing “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” Snoop Dogg invited Dr. Dre for their classic “The Next Episode” in Long Beach.
Actor Tom Cruise made a grand entrance atop the Stade de France during the closing ceremony. He descended dramatically while H.E.R. played her guitar, rode a motorcycle through the audience, and in a pre-recorded segment, sped through Paris before jumping out of a plane and parachuting onto Californian soil.
Billie Eilish performed “Birds of a Feather” from her third studio album “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” while the Red Hot Chili Peppers rocked out with their 2003 hit “Can’t Stop.”
H.E.R. sang the U.S. national anthem while Simone Biles and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass supported her, with H.E.R. playing a custom Stratocaster guitar.
The Parisian singer and model Yseult closed the show with a rendition of Frank Sinatra’s classic “My Way,” which is based on the French song “Comme d’habitude” by Jacques Revaux and Claude François.
The performance by the French band Phoenix was so electrifying that some athletes found it hard to leave the stage during the first half of the ceremony. Volunteers and security tried to usher the Olympic athletes away, but they resisted. The Grammy-winning band played “Lisztomania” and their hit “If I Ever Feel Better,” joined by the duo Air for “Playground Love.”
Fireworks marked the end of the 2024 Summer Olympics closing ceremony on Sunday, August 11, 2024, in Saint-Denis, France. After the musical number, Phoenix’s lead singer, Thomas Mars, leapt into the crowd for a lift, while Ezra Koenig performed “Tonight.”
