Former Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy has expressed skepticism regarding the team’s ability to succeed in the playoffs due to ongoing shooting struggles. During a recent episode of FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back,” Van Gundy voiced his concerns, particularly about the challenges faced by star player Cade Cunningham when defenses tighten in the high-stakes postseason. He noted that beyond Duncan Robinson, the roster does not present a significant offensive threat.

The Pistons are coming off a disappointing 114-103 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs, which highlighted their enduring weakness in three-point shooting. In that game, the Pistons managed to hit only 7 of 36 attempts from beyond the arc, translating to a dismal 19.4%. In contrast, the Spurs capitalized with an impressive 18 of 40, or 45% from three-point range.

Entering their matchup against Oklahoma City, the Pistons rank 28th in the league in three-pointers made per game with an average of 11.1, along with a 21st place standing in three-point shooting percentage at 34.9%. The current roster features only Robinson and Cunningham averaging multiple three-point field goals per game.

In a bid to enhance their long-range shooting, the Pistons acquired shooting guard Kevin Huerter at the trade deadline. However, Huerter’s stint with the team has been underwhelming, as he has only converted 1 of 9 attempts from three-point range over his first four games, and he has been sidelined for three games since the All-Star break.

Despite his doubts about their playoff prospects, Van Gundy praised the Pistons for their consistent effort, stating they are “great to watch” and bring their best to each game. He acknowledged them as “the most consistent team in the league in terms of what they bring to the floor.”

Van Gundy, who coached the Pistons from 2014 to 2018, holds a career coaching record of 554-425 and last coached in the NBA during the 2020-21 season with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Pistons continue to face challenges, but their competitive spirit and dedication may pave the way for improvement as they aim for a stronger performance in the future.
