St. Louis City SC made the decision to part ways with head coach Olof Mellberg just three days after suffering their eighth loss of the season. Currently sitting 14th in the Western Conference, the team’s record stands at two wins, eight losses, and five draws, reflecting significant struggles in scoring goals.
David Critchley, who has been with the club since 2021 and currently serves as the head coach for City2, will take on the role of first team manager during the search for a new head coach. City2 has performed relatively well under Critchley, boasting a record of 6-4-1, and an impressive average of 1.82 points per game with 20 goals scored.
Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel emphasized that the decision to release Mellberg was based on various performance factors, not solely results. He stated, “Our fans deserve a better performing team, and we intend to give them one,” underlining the club’s commitment to returning to a style of play that has characterized their success over the past few years.
Baggio Hušidić, currently serving as the assistant coach for City2, will join Critchley in the first team coaching setup. Meanwhile, the technical director, John Hackworth, will step in as the new head coach for City2.
This transitional period represents an opportunity for St. Louis City SC to recalibrate and potentially revive their competitive edge in the league. With fresh leadership in Critchley and dedicated support from Hušidić, there is hope that the club can turn its fortunes around and provide the performance their fans expect.
