The South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX) is taking significant strides towards sustainability with its inaugural technical training initiative since joining the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (UNSSE) network. This free online workshop, set for October 7, 2025, aims to educate participants on the newly introduced International Financial Reporting Standards for sustainability disclosure, IFRS S1 and IFRS S2. It invites diverse participation from SPX-listed companies, private entities, financial institutions, regulatory bodies, and advisory firms.
This initiative is particularly timely given the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants’ decision in August 2024 to postpone the adoption of these standards until January 1, 2026. The workshop provides a valuable opportunity for professionals in various sectors—governance, strategy, risk management, accounting, finance, and sustainability—to align with international standards. Participants will engage directly with the creators of these benchmarks, gaining insights necessary for aligning their practices with global expectations.
SPX CEO Sheraj Obeyesekere underscores the importance of this training as a foundational step under the UNSSE, reflecting SPX’s dedication to building technical expertise and strengthening Fiji’s capital markets. Through interactive sessions and live Q&A opportunities, attendees will receive an in-depth exploration of IFRS S1 and S2, bolstered by practical guidance on improving sustainability disclosure practices.
As the Pacific region grapples with the impact of climate change, the introduction of these standards is both timely and necessary. Integrating sustainability within financial practices is increasingly seen as vital for building resilience and fostering long-term development. This training aligns with SPX’s broader goals of embedding sustainability within financial frameworks, enhancing transparency, and cultivating investor confidence.
Through its active engagement in this training initiative and ongoing participation in the global UNSSE network, SPX demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable practices. These efforts not only aim to elevate local financial markets but also position Fiji as a proactive player in the global dialogue on sustainable finance, contributing to a more resilient and integrated financial ecosystem worldwide.
