Tottenham Hotspur narrowly escaped an upset in the third round of the English League Cup, coming from behind to defeat Coventry City 2-1 at Coventry Arena on Wednesday.
Brandon Thomas-Asante put Coventry in the lead with a goal in the 63rd minute, but Djed Spence equalized for Tottenham in the 88th minute. Just as time was running out, Brennan Johnson delivered the decisive goal in the second minute of stoppage time, ensuring Spurs’ progression in the tournament.
Coventry, who had a memorable run to the FA Cup semifinals last season, nearly pulled off another surprise against top-tier opponents, but ultimately fell short. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou praised Coventry’s performance, stating, “Coventry were outstanding with the energy they brought, we had to dig deep today and we found what we needed to win the game.”
In other results, Wolverhampton Wanderers continued to struggle this season, suffering a 3-2 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion, which saw them eliminated from the cup. Brighton took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Carlos Baleba and Simon Adingra, while Goncalo Guedes managed to score for Wolves before halftime. Ferdi Kadioglu extended Brighton’s lead to 3-1 in the 85th minute, and although Tommy Doyle scored in the 90th minute for Wolves, it was not enough to change the outcome.
